In the first leg of their CHAN 2024 qualifier, Nigeria’s home-based national side showed tactical discipline by securing a goalless draw against Ghana.
Ghana dominated the first half of Sunday’s game at the Accra Sports Stadium but was unable to convert their chances, frustrating the home crowd.
Daniel Ogunmodede, the head coach of Nigeria’s team, said that his team played conservatively in the first half to prevent giving up.
“We were better in the second half, right? In the first half, we were afraid of the Ghanaians. We are going to be our best at home, and we will take it from there,” Ogunmodede told Pan-Africa Football.
Nigeria’s performance in the second half improved dramatically, despite Ghana’s pressure in the first half, paving the way for a decisive return leg.
Ogunmodede emphasized the value of CHAN for local players and the Nigerian Football Federation while expressing confidence in his team’s chances of qualifying.
“We are going to take advantage of our opportunity to qualify. As African giants, we are aware of the significance of players, our local league, and the goals our federation is attempting to achieve for the country,” he stated.
To guarantee their spot in the CHAN 2024 tournament, Nigeria will play the second leg on December 28 at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium in Uyo.
