Takoradi’s Central Business District was a hive of activity as colorful masqueraders occupied the main thoroughfares to display their exquisite and varied ethnic crafts.
The Westside Carnival, sometimes referred to as the “Ankos,” is the one event that makes Takoradi the go-to place in Ghana for Christmas celebrations. It brought yet another heat as a large number of locals and revelers marched and danced in the streets while wearing vibrant and distinctive costumes.
The more than thirty masquerade groups paraded through the streets with incredible dancing and elaborate presentations, supported by brass bands and trumpets playing local tunes at various spots.
The many masquerade groups’ amazing artistic and eye-catching performances delighted some of the observers who traveled far and close to see the lovely scenes.
In an interview with the Ghana News Agency (GNA), John Amoah, a member of the Yankee Masquerade group, stated that the carnival offered a chance for friends and family to get together and enjoy happy times.
“As you know, the Ankos here in Takoradi make our city interesting and vibrant to be for Christmas celebrations, and I think everybody is buzzing,” he said, adding that the event distinguished Takoradi from other cities as the ideal location for Christmas celebrations.
“Takoradi is the place to be during Christmas, so I invite everyone that has not witnessed this before to come here and see how bright our city gets during this period,” exuberant Nathaniel Egyir, a member of the Cosmos Masquerade group, stated.
“Let us use this season to live in peace and harmony with one another while enjoying the good times together and praying that God would give all our heart’s aspirations for the following year,” he added.
Police officers were present at strategic locations and at certain junctions to maintain order, a safe entertainment area, and incident-free celebrations for everyone while the fun, excitement, and buzzing continued.
