Energy Minister Forms Committee to Create Roadmap for ECG Privatization

A seven-member committee has been established by Energy and Green Transition Minister John Jinapor to provide recommendations on a plan for the Electricity Company of Ghana’s (ECG) privatization.

Jabesh Amissah-Arthur, the former CEO of Bui Electricity Authority, is the chair of the committee that the minister charged with ensuring a financially sustainable model that will ensure the efficiency of the electricity distribution industry, including the Northern Electricity Distribution Company (NEDCo).

One of the first significant steps the newly appointed minister has made to resolve problems in Ghana’s power sector is the committee’s inauguration.

The action comes after a recent study by the financial advising firm PwC that showed ECG had a debt of 47.2 billion cedis and a net loss of 5.96 billion cedis.

“As a government, it is our responsibility to serve the average Ghanaian,” Mr. Jinapor stated.

“Efficiency, a certain amount of accountability, openness, and making sure we turn things around is what we are aiming for.” He went on.

He urged all parties involved to properly collaborate with the committee that is in charge of energy sector reform. The Energy Minister pleaded, “If they have your assistance, I can come up with a road map that would ensure that we bring about efficiency, but that is acceptable to all of us.”

Mr. Jinapor underlined that the committee must give equitable involvement of Ghanaians in the final framework top priority.

“We have consistently supported local content, therefore keep in mind that local content participation should be a component of ECG’s operations in all that you do.”

Additionally, he voiced alarm over debts accumulated as a result of what he called ECGs concerning procurement procedures.

The committee’s chairman, Jabesh Amissah-Arthur, responded by pledging the committee’s steadfast dedication to providing a long-term solution that will benefit ECG.

To guarantee the effective operation of the power distribution agencies, the committee has one month to present a financially viable privatization proposal.

Benjamin Boakye, Dr. Simon Akorli, Ebenezer Baiden, Emma Akua Bulley (Esq), Edward Abrokwah, Dr. Shafic Suleman as secretary, and Jabesh Amissah-Arthur as chairman are among the committee members.
