At the Baba Yara Stadium on Friday night, Asante Kotoko defeated Bibiani Goldstars 2-0, maintaining their strong play in the Ghana Premier League.
With the win, Kotoko won the league for the fourth time in a row and moved up to second position, three points behind the leaders and tied with third-place Goldstars.
After a Goldstars defender’s hand blocked Samba’s goal-bound header, Justice Blay converted a penalty kick to give the Porcupine Warriors the lead in the eighteenth minute.
Throughout the first half, Kotoko dominated, generating a lot of opportunities and reducing the offensive threats posed by the Goldstars.
Bright Boakye Kyereh’s dismissal for a careless challenge on Amidu in the 36th minute made the visitors’ task even more challenging.
Despite being down to ten men, the Goldstars managed to hold their own until Kwame Opoku’s brilliant moment in the 74th minute doubled Kotoko’s lead.
For the first time since rejoining Kotoko, Opoku started and showed off his skills with a well-placed attempt that gave the goalie no chance.
Just before halftime, the forward had come close to scoring with a magnificent mid-air header, but his effort lacked force.
With a 51% possession rate, Kotoko had 14 goal attempts and seven shots on goal, while the Goldstars had nine attempts and only two on goal.
Goldstars only managed one corner, while the hosts won seven.
As they get closer to the top rank in the league, the victory cements Kotoko’s comeback. The Porcupine Warriors are establishing themselves as strong candidates in this season’s championship race now that Opoku is in form and the team is playing at its peak.
